This guide follows the official 2024 ICC outline: seven categories, each broken into the outline's sub-topics, with the governing 2024 IMC/IFGC sections and tables listed under each sub-topic. Every section number and value below was checked against the 2024 text; where the IMC hands a subject to another code (plumbing code, energy code, fire code, NFPA standard) that hand-off is stated rather than inventing a value.
| Subject | Book | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Permits, plans, inspections, appeals, violations | IMC Chapter 1 (IFGC Chapter 1 is a parallel copy) | IMC 101–115 |
| Equipment location, access, clearances, condensate, supports | IMC Chapter 3 | IMC 301–312 |
| Ventilation rates, intakes, garages | IMC Chapter 4 | IMC 401–407 |
| Exhaust systems, kitchen hoods, grease ducts, hazardous exhaust, dust conveying, smoke control | IMC Chapter 5 | IMC 501–513 |
| Ducts, plenums, insulation, smoke detectors, fire/smoke dampers | IMC Chapter 6 | IMC 601–608 |
| Combustion air | IMC 701.1 points gas appliances to the IFGC | IFGC 304 |
| Chimneys, vents, connectors (oil, solid fuel, general) | IMC Chapter 8 | IMC 801–806 |
| Gas venting, gas vent connectors, vent sizing | IFGC Chapter 5 | IFGC 501–504 |
| Specific appliances, boilers, water heaters, refrigeration, hydronics, solar | IMC Chapters 9–14 | IMC 901–1404 |
| Gas piping materials, sizing, installation, testing, valves, connectors | IFGC Chapter 4 | IFGC 401–416 |
| Fuel oil piping | IMC Chapter 13 | IMC 1301–1308 |
2024 renumbering you must know. IMC Chapter 1 was reorganized: permits are now Section 105 (were 106), construction documents 106 (were 110), inspections and testing 111 (were 108), fees 108 (were 109), service utilities 109 (were 112), stop work orders 115 (were 113), means of appeals 112 (were 114), violations 114 (were 115), and the old Section 105 "Approval" became 104.2.3 (alternative materials) and 104.2.4 (modifications). In IMC Chapter 5, fire suppression for Type I hoods moved into 507.2.11, hazardous exhaust is now 509 (was 510), dust/stock/refuse conveying is 510 (was 511), subslab soil exhaust 511, smoke control 512 and energy recovery ventilation 513. Hood capacities moved from 507.5 into 507.2.10 (Type I) and 507.3.4 (Type II); hood size and location is 507.1.6; grease duct materials are 506.3.1. IFGC Chapter 1 was renumbered the same way as the IMC (101–114); IFGC Chapters 2–8 kept their 2021 numbers.
Outline task: verify that project information, approved plans and specifications are provided and adequate; verify permits are issued and valid; verify products not detailed in the code are approved by the code official and installed per their listing.
