The Fuel Gas Inspector verifies the design, installation and inspection of fuel gas piping systems and equipment, gas-fired appliances and venting systems. Every question is drawn solely from the 2024 IFGC — a single-book exam that rewards deep familiarity with how the IFGC is organized.

2024 edition note: Chapter 1 was reorganized in the 2024 IFGC. Permits are now Section 105 (2021: 106), construction documents 106 (2021: 107), fees 108, service utilities 109 (2021: 110), inspections and testing 111 (2021: 112), means of appeals 112, violations and unsafe installations 113 (2021: 115) and stop work orders 114 (2021: 116). The old Section 105 "Approval" provisions (modifications, alternative materials, required testing) moved into 104.2. Chapters 2 through 8 kept their 2021 numbering. If you studied from older material, re-learn the Chapter 1 numbers.

A note on the [IFGS] / [IFGC] markers: many sections carry a bracketed [IFGS] marker, meaning the text comes from the International Fuel Gas Standard (the ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54 content the IFGC incorporates). Combustion air (304), pipe sizing (402), materials (403), testing (406), support intervals (415), venting of appliances (503) and vent sizing (504) are IFGS sections. The marker does not change how you apply the provision.

Authority of Inspector (Sections 103, 104, 109, 113, 114)

• 104.1 / 104.2 Duties and powers: the code official enforces the code, determines compliance, renders interpretations and adopts policies and procedures — but interpretations and policies shall not have the effect of waiving code requirements (104.2, Item 2). Listed equipment is installed per its listing and the manufacturer's instructions (104.2.1).
• 104.2.3 Alternative materials and methods and 104.2.4 Modifications: alternatives must be approved as equivalent (quality, strength, effectiveness, durability, safety, fire safety); modifications are granted only for individual cases with practical difficulties and are recorded in writing.
• 104.4 Right of entry: where an inspection is necessary or the official has reasonable cause to believe an unsafe condition exists, the official may enter at reasonable times; in an occupied structure the official presents credentials and requests entry; if refused, the recourse is every remedy provided by law (an inspection warrant, 104.4.1) — never forced entry. The official carries identification (104.5).
• 109.1 Connection of service utilities: no utility connection to a permitted system until authorized by the code official. 109.3 Authority to disconnect service utilities: in an emergency to eliminate an immediate hazard to life or property, or where the connection was made without the approval required by 111.1 or 111.2; the utility and, wherever possible, the owner and occupant are notified before disconnection, otherwise in writing as soon as practical.
• 113 Violations: notice of violation (113.2); prosecution (113.3); 113.6 unsafe installations are a public nuisance to be abated; 113.6.1 written order to remove or restore, with immediate disconnection without notice where there is immediate danger; 113.6.2 disconnection per 109.3; 113.6.3 no reconnection until authorized.
• 112 Means of appeals: the board of appeals hears claims that the code was incorrectly interpreted, does not fully apply or that an equivalent is proposed; the board shall not waive requirements (112.2) and its members may not be employees of the jurisdiction (112.3).
• 114 Stop work order: issued in writing for work contrary to the code or performed in a dangerous or unsafe manner; work ceases immediately; no written notice needed in an emergency (114.3).
