CATEGORY 1: GENERAL FIRE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS (22% - 18 Questions)

1.1 Fire Code Administration (IFC Chapter 1)

Purpose and Scope (IFC 101)

• IFC applies to new and existing buildings, facilities, structures, and conditions
• Establishes minimum requirements for fire and life safety
• Works in conjunction with IBC for new construction

Permits (IFC 105)

1.2 Definitions (IFC Chapter 2)

Critical Fire Safety Definitions:

APPROVED: Acceptable to the fire code official or authority having jurisdiction

AUTOMATIC: Self-acting, operating by its own mechanism when actuated by impersonal influence (e.g., change in current, pressure, temperature)

COMBUSTIBLE LIQUID: Liquid with closed-cup flash point ≥ 100°F (38°C)

• Class II: Flash point ≥ 100°F and < 140°F
• Class IIIA: Flash point ≥ 140°F and < 200°F
• Class IIIB: Flash point ≥ 200°F

FIRE AREA: Floor area enclosed by fire walls, fire barriers, exterior walls, or fire-resistance-rated horizontal assemblies

FIRE BARRIER: Fire-resistance-rated wall assembly that restricts spread of fire, extends continuously from foundation to roof deck or assembly above

FIRE WALL: Fire-resistance-rated wall with protected openings that restricts fire spread; provides structural stability under fire conditions

FLAMMABLE LIQUID: Liquid with closed-cup flash point < 100°F (38°C)

• Class IA: Flash point < 73°F, boiling point < 100°F
• Class IB: Flash point < 73°F, boiling point ≥ 100°F
• Class IC: Flash point ≥ 73°F and < 100°F

LISTED: Equipment, materials, or services included in a list published by an approved testing laboratory (UL, FM, etc.)

MEANS OF EGRESS: Continuous and unobstructed path of vertical and horizontal egress travel from any occupied portion to public way

• Consists of: Exit access → Exit → Exit discharge

OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATION: Principal use or character of a building/structure or part thereof

• Assembly (A), Business (B), Educational (E), Factory/Industrial (F), High-Hazard (H), Institutional (I), Mercantile (M), Residential (R), Storage (S), Utility (U)

1.3 General Precautions Against Fire (IFC Chapter 3)

Combustible Materials Storage (IFC 315)

• Maintain clearance from lot lines: minimum 10 feet
• Pile dimensions: max 20 feet wide, max height varies by material
• Fire breaks required in large storage areas

Clearance from Heat Sources (IFC 308)

• Combustible materials: minimum 36 inches from heat-producing appliances
• Heat shields can reduce clearance (per manufacturer/testing)

Open Burning (IFC 307)

• Generally prohibited in urban areas
• Exceptions: recreational fires, ceremonial fires (with permit)
• Recreational fires: 3 feet diameter max, 2 feet high max, 25-foot clearance from structures

Hot Work (IFC 3503)

• Permit required for most welding, cutting, torch operations
• Fire watch required during and 30 minutes after operations
• Portable fire extinguishers readily accessible
